Twisting the nib clockwise extends and retracts the refill.
Unscrewing the nib anti-clockwise allows access to the refill.

No buffing or polishing on the MINWAX finish required.

Very nice looking pen Les. Quick question, what is the finish. I usually use CA and typically darkens cedar a lot more then what yours show.

Edit - Don't worry about answering this post, I went back and reread the OP, apparently I didn't read it the first time.

Do you have a simple step-by-step on how you created this single tube pen? I'd love to give it a shot. Also, how did you apply the Minwax? Brush, cloth on or off the lathe?

What initiative have you taken to try on your own to make a modified pen?

Have a look at my tutorial in the Reference Library on how I apply my MINWAX finish.

Nice job Les! I love that wood. Not only does it have a nice smell, but it looks so beautiful when finished. Good job!
