I have tried repeatedly to call and order from AS..they are always busy and won't take an order. I have been trying to get the closed end mandrels. Is there another maker of these things? Anyone have a suggestion?

Look at Skiprat's (Stephen Jackson's) tutorial on O-ring pin chucks in the library. An excellent replacement at lower cost and works great.

Still fumbling my way around here ~ how does 1 find this tutorial?

Thanks,
Tim

At the top of this page you will see a link to the "Library" click on it once there you can look around. Best thing to do is to click on the "IAP Library Index" it list all the tutorials.

Good Luck

One thing about A.S. They have always answered the phone when I called. They do have strict operating hours. I think after 10-5 and remember the time zone mountain time. They only answer questions and prefer you to order on line. He may be closed (not answering the phone) during the holidays.

thanks

Appreciate the link to skiprat's tutorial...never thought to check library for a commercially produced product..why not order on website??? Ever had your identity stolen and lived thru hell for a year? You might choose not to put a credit card into the internet system...I cannot understand why he won't take an order over the phone, but I will find a way to do without his product...Thanks again for your assistance

Jack, we can understand you're problem & keep our fingers crossed it doesn't happen to us. I've never delt with A.S yet but intend to someday, but from what I understand, it's a 'mom & pop' business working out of their home. You can't drive up & go inside to purchase. I can't say he's a small' M&P bus. with all the members here that constantly buy from him. But on his standpoint, most people that want to phone in a order will want to BS some what & doing the business he eventally does he doesn't want to be rude & cut them off. By doing mostly internet sales it's easier for him & gives him time to answer the questions that have to be answered & help people that are having problems with a kit or something. I'll bet he keeps that as short as possible.
Like I said, I'm not by any way knocking you for wanting to phone in your orders, especially for what you went thru. When I was in business & someone wanted to just talk or bs, I had to tell them they'd have to follow me around. I didn't have time in my 14-16 hr. day to let others wait. Not saying you were wanting to BS. but look at both sides. Thank you Dick

On the phone, I admit I feel like I am irritating them, but far as online, they are a great business. They are quick, and always toss in a surprise freebie. I really like that...it's what you used to expect from a small business in the west or mid-west and almost non-existant in these modern times. Generally, I compare prices with matching quality to determine who gets my business, and I cross my fingers as I do this in hopes that I'll at least be placing part of my order through AZ.

I have met the Baumbecks and have done business with them. They operate out of an industrial park in Yuma Az. They have a good setup with the appropriate security for internet -- but are set up to handle checks or moneyorders for payment from the webpage orders. I have also ordered over the phone, but the response is a function of how busy they are at the time.

Bill is a fine turner and a good, fair business man. I have always been satified with the service, products, and help asked for has been good.

Send him an e-mail and expect at response in a reasonable time.

He packs his own shippments and they are all but foolproof with glue and tape.

I did as one of you suggested and emailed Bill...I explained my dilemna and he appears to only wish to do this over the internet. That is his privelege, as it is his business. I'm sure he has issues to deal with daily also..but I did rack my brain on options to having the mandrel unavailable..I found an article in Woodturning design by R. Kleinholtz(sp) about pin chucks and I remembered Mr. Gross has info in his book..so there are options out there..tho , I suspect the mandrels will turn true and save a lot of touble..thanks for your imput

I do not know what state that you live in, but maybe you have some woodturners around you that could help you out. Maybe someone could order you one and then sell it back to you to help you out. If you wnated one of the ones that Bill sells.

Unless Bill has changed his site, you can still order on the website and then choose payment by check or money order and then send him the check or MO. That does not involve divulging any information that isn't already public.

I completely understand him wanting all orders to come through the website. I'm sure his software keeps track of each item ordered and at the end of the year he can get reports that will be valuable to him.

I've dealt with them a few times and never had a problem. Might be a 'glitchie' week for them?

I can vouch for Bill. The man has always been fair and reasonable. Website orders are probably better for him as far as inventory goes and the software involved in customer tracking. I have never been disappointed and have spoken with Bill on the phone as well as via email. Give er another try :)
