How do you guys go about applying thin CA? I just started messing with this a "sanding sealer" coat before the med CA/oil finish part. The one where I didn't glue my fingers together turned out ok, the other one was lumpy, and un even and I missed a few spots.

When I use thin CA as a sanding sealer, I apply the CA to the blank as I sand with a strip of sandpaper with the lathe turning slowly.
I let the sawdust build up on the paper and blank before I apply the CA.

I have changed some time ago to thin CA as my finish of choice. It is applied with a folded quarter paper towel (paper towel is then about 3/4" wide and some 4 inches long). This strip lasts for two pens with four applications of CA each - I use aerosol accelerator. I leaned this way some years back from Rich Kleinhenz at the AAW meet in Louisville.
Its fast and easy and, most important, gives me consistent and reproducible results. Just run your finger after each application and feel if there are any ridges - if you feel some, use a 400 Abranet mesh and knock them off. After the fourth application I MM sand to 3600 and finish up with Novus fine scratch remover - great finish guaranteed.

If you apply the first thin coast with a piece of polyester quilt batting folded and secured on one end with a piece of tape(this is the end I hold on to), it serves as a seal coat. The CA glue does not interact with the batting like it does with paper towel. I then use thick CA and sandpaper to sand into a slurry. This fills any imperfections. Then I use CA and BLO for 3 more coats sanding through all the steps. This is the best finish I have found for pens.

i scrapped using sanding sealer a while ago. i just get it sanded to 220, then do the sandpaper/thin CA/sawdust slurry application, sand that back down and go ahead with the rest of the CA coats. like Rudy, i used thin only for a long time, it is more predictable. but i finally got better at using medium, so i use both in conjunction now. i like a paper towel (usually the blue shop towels) to apply.

Gerry I was going to do that but I was out of CO2 cartridges for my spray gun. Do you think if I would have poured half in my mouth and spewed it on the blank it would work? Will spit leave cloudy spots in the finish or will I get a true spit shine?[:o)]

I guess 3900 rpm and squeezing half the bottle out is not the way to go??????

Absolutely not! First you have to put the entire bottle in a spray gun.:D[}:)]
