Anyone Want to Split an Order of Snakewood?

I can only imagine the clear-cutting that went on to obtain these logs. As much as I love snakewood, this is depressing. Tempting [8D], but depressing. :(

I don't see any problem harvesting any wood. Facts get lost in hysteria.
BTW, why split an order? Snakewood splits quite well all by itself.

Hey Jim, I can use some snakewood! I will go in with you for part of it, if you are successful in your bid. I'll be able to take about $54.00 worth, if you can handle the $53,946.00 + the $1,800.00 shipping![}:)];)[:p]:D

For those who wish to allay their guilt, I suggest ceasing the use of all exotic woods for turning pens or other decorative items. Also cease use of casting synthetics because of the environmental concerns surrounding the manufacturing process.

You also support the use of DDT? How about lead in children's toys? ;)

Glad you winked. I was suggesting for others. I have a good idea. Lets save the world. Eliminate all humans except for know-it-all celebrity movie stars.

It's Christmas Eve, Eve. You and I, Frank, like others in IAP, have some hard times to get thru over the next few days. In the spirit of Christmas .... I love you Frank. Crazy mixed up ideas and all ...... we're still penturning brothers. :)

I read somewhere, can't remember where, that only about 20% of the log will have the scaley figure. Harvesters prefer to sell the whole log because a buyer thinks he is getting a very good deal if he expects the whole log to have the desireable figure. Probably why snakewood planks and blanks are so expensive. Something to consider if anyone is thinking about buying some logs.

Thanks, Doc. This is a subject I have looked into, including the DDT issue. I have a friend who exports exotic woods from South America. He is also educated and a devout environmentalist. He has researched the issue of tree cutting in SA, especially in the Amazon region. (BTW, that is a very huge hunk of geography) His objective studies have found, among other things: Wood harvested from the Amazon region annually is less than 1/4 the amount harvested from Oregon each year. Cleared land in SA does regenerate despite what the Hollywood celebrities say. He has photos of many areas taken at different stages of regrowth to demonstrate this. The reason they regenerate is that SA birds do the same thing that birds all around the world do. They poop. And bird poop contains seeds that drop and germinate. As for the "bare spot" caused by that Snakewood being harvested, I did not see evidence that those logs all came from the same 'spot' and were not selectively harvested over a large area. I also have an issue with those (us) who use exotic woods then gripe about them being harvested. BTW, my friend selectively harvests from land he owns and from trees taken down for road building, and other uses. As for the DDT, recent studies have shown it is not the demon chemical that some said before it was banned. But the hysteria remains. And, as a result, millions of children (and adults) are dying in South America and Africa from malaria transmitted by mosquitoes. If DDT were reintroduced in those areas, the incidence of disease would drop dramatically. But the hysterical movie stars are preventing this. Save the mosquitoes, kill the children instead. Great logic.

Do you or your friend have any facts or are these just more apocryphal stories generated to justify the rape of the planet and it virgin forests? It seems to me that the CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) parties, 172 agreeing parties of which the United States is one, probably have a fact or two at their disposal. By the way, a quick check of facts will also show that while no longer used in the US, DDT use continues in other parts of the world. Many tropical countries still use DDT to control malaria.

As I said, if you had read: "educated" "has researched" "objective studies" "photographs". He is also well read, he hosts scientific studies, etc. Yes, he has facts. Believe the Hollywood nutcakes if you wish. Recent documentaries on Discovery Channel and, even liberal, CNN showed the plight of many in undeveloped countries who are dying from malaria because of mosquito infestation. No control there. What something "seems" to you doesn't make it fact. There are many organizations that espouse a points of view that are, often, subjective and biased. Fini.
