It's GRANITE! Yep; black granite or a reasonable facsimile. Headstock, ways and tailstock.

There was one in our local Woodcraft on display only. But the thing was slick! I didn't check to see if CA would stick to it :(

I've got the cast iron steel city, and other than the dumb on-off switch it's a great little lathe, I know that in theory Granite wont distort due to temperature fluctuations, nor rust, that's why it's used for surface plates and precision layout, but have you ever seen how it can get scratched, or chipped, I have, and is it natural Granite or engineered? I would think taht the enginerred would probably hold up better, sort of like TruStone

I have to say that Steel City has been real responsive about replacment parts for my VS lathe. They had a new tailstock to me in 2 days, I called about the power switch that went out on this lathe. As soon as they are in stock they are putting one in the mail. Luckily the switch died in the on position.

The ways or granite parts have a 10yr warrenty if I read the literature correctly, and considering how responsive they have been, I have no doubts that if the ways cracked or broke they would have a new one on its way right fast.

The power switches on many of these lathes are not sealed units. If the switch has an interlock, remove it and blow out the switch with compressed air. Often the switch will work again.

The permanent solution is to install a sealed switch with a rubber boot over the toggle.
