anyone ever run into this

While drilling some blanks of what I think is Bocote, it sounded like I was drilling into ground glass, with very hard spots in the wood, kicking the brand new drill all over, ruined 2 blanks. I hesitate to drill any more of this wood. Used the same drill on other woods and worked fine so I don't think it was the drill itself.

I have not personally witnessed it but rocks have been found inbedded in wood before.

It's a little different situation, but yes, I have chain saws that are wonderful rock-and-metal-in-wood-locators!!!

Maybe try drilling a small pilot hole first and then drill it out with the size bit for the tube you will be using.

could be barb wire that was embedded in the wood from years back, or as others have said a rock.

Cut one of the ruined blanks apart to see what was in there (rock, knot, etc.) If nothing is there, it may be a dull or chipped drill bit. I've had some brand new bits that were about as sharp as a butter knife.

I cut into a camphor tree a while back and hit a 3' piece of 5/8" ribar. Antone wanna buy a slightly used chain for a Stihl?
