Anyone ever made a chess set?

My sister-in-law asked me about making a chess set for her husband to go with an antique chess table someone had given him. I told her I'd look into it but didn't commit.

Any advice on this kind of project, other than not doing it (that's obvious), would be appreciated.

One of the classics for chess sets was published in the 1990 American woodworker.

The author passed away 10 years ago. Rude was one of the grandparents of modern woodturning.

Mike Darrow has a book on the topic.

O'Donnell has started a series on chess pieces in the British mag Turning - PM me if you want to see a scan of the first article (pawns).
 
I read on one of my former haunts a fellow ordered a 6" set with a couple extra queens and rooks for "promotions" from a turning fellow in India via Ebay. He could barely get the wood for what he paid with shipping.

Chess Set

I made one from a kit a while back. Woodcraft carried it at that time. They have since discontinued but someone else must have one. It was really a nice kit (brass tops and bottoms).
