Heard about this on the radio Friday:
25 trees cut down as part of senior prank | The Columbus Dispatch

Is anyone close to this area? I'd love to get some of that wood and make pens from it. Surely they would have some value as mementos.:wink:

I could engrave the pens with nice slogans:

Most. Expensive. Pen. Ever.

"I'd rather have graduated"

Maybe I could package them with a Tshirt that says:

"My classmates got diplomas - all I got was this shirt and a pen."


Any other slogan ideas?

Wow, I just read that article. Yeah, that's within an hour's drive for me. Maybe those responsible won't think their prank is so funny when their parents get the bill to replace them.

As for the wood, do you know what kind of trees they were? I'm not sure if they'd have much figure for an interesting pen as most of the common trees in our area don't have grain structure for that. I'm not knocking the wood for other things though.

Now if the trees had burls, spalting, insect markings etc. that would be ideal once the material is seasoned.

I've done some pens with birdseye maple, ambrosia stains, and spalting and I really enjoy the results.

I'm thinking it wouldn't matter about the beauty of the wood. Sentimental value would be the most important factor, in that local market.

I imagine the "perps" never considered that each tree commemorated someone special to the school's heritage. Hopefully it wasn't that well conceived.

Maybe they'll get to take the "perp walk"?
