Does anyone buy brass tubes (other than 7mm or 10mm) in length and cut them rather than buying them already sized? If so where. I am looking for sizes for some of the nicer kits to play with the dimensions NOT to save money. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Chris - If all you want to do is play with dimensions, why not buy extra tubes that will be the exact diameter needed and use 2 or parts of 2. The pen won't know its not one tube.

WoodnWhimsies sells 7mm, 8mm, 3/8", and 10mm tubes in ten inch lengths.

The problem I had was.. I used a small tube cutter to cut them.. It made the ends really weak. I think the best way would be to cut them on the bandsaw with a metal blade.. But after I had the weak ends I stopped for a while

I have bought them from PSI, CSUSA and from hobby shops that sell parts for model train and planes. You can get them and then cut them to any length. I use them to make longer bottom blanks so that I don't have to use bands in making pens. They are great for making new styles or experimenting.

Richard - Thanks for the link to Votaw Tool Company. I was browsing their site and I think its worth noting that they have 20 different brass tube sizes ranging from 1/16" to 21/32". But the best part is that the complete set telescopes! Think of the possibilities not only for freeform pen shapes and styles, but the use as shims for barrel trimmers and mandrels!:D
