Anyone around the Estes Park, CO area?

I am going to have to make a little trip out to Colorado tomorrow and have a couple of days to check out the area, anything there to see or should I just sleep this trip away?

That is a beautiful area. Went there a few years ago and fell in love with it. Don't sleep the time away. I would love to be there and just sit and enjoy the fresh air and the view.
 
Hey Wolftat. Estes Park is the main entrance to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park. Is there anything to see? How about the highest continuous highway in America at 12,000 feet. Regretfully, it is currently closed and won't reopen 'til the end of May. You should still be able to see elk, deer and possibly coyotes and foxes on the short stretch of Trail Ridge Road that will be open.

If you wanna fish, trout can easily be caught at St. Vrain SP just north of Denver, tho, that is pretty much all at that park.

You can drive up the Peak to Peak highway, visit the Argo Gold Mine Museum in Idaho Springs, and visit Buffalo Bills Gravesite overlooking Denver.

Hiking is almost anywhere in the Denver area.

The list can be long, but it all depends on what you like to do! Let me know what things you enjoy and I'll try to put a list together for you tonight!

You are arriving at just about the very start of mud season. The Denver area is starting to blossom but the mountains will still be a bit snow covered with only a few green shoots starting to push through. Still, the roads are all plowed and dry so you might consider a drive along Trail Ridge Rode (so far as it is currently open). Estes Park is nice little place to spend an afternoon walking around. A drive down Big Thompson into Loveland is nice drive of about an hour. You should have no trouble filling a couple of days with a bit of sight seeing and window shopping.
 
Check out the Stanley hotel and take the ghost tour. My wife and I stumbled into it on a trip and it was definitely the highlight of our vacation. The Stanley is supposedly one of the most haunted places in America and was the inspiration behind Stephen King's "The Shining."

Its open for a ways into the park but not yet completely open. Given the entry fee for the park, this may not be the best time to drive it.
 
Neil, I lived along the northern front range in Colorado for 18 wonderful years. A drive up to Estes from Longmont is just breathtaking with beauty. Lots of candy shops and t-shirt stores in Estes, but it will be a drive you will remember. I strongly advise you do it. You will not regret it. At Lyons, just west of Longmont at the very base of the mountains, you can take the south or north road up and return on the other. Awesome views. I never got tired of it.
 
Thanks for the info everyone, I will take a drive around and check it out. Mud season sounds like fun, especially since they are giving me a Humvee to drive while there.
