Anybody know how to make one cheaper? Fred? Paul?

Does anybody have any great ideas of how it might be possible (for someone like me) to make something like this steady rest?

At the AAW club I used to belong to, someone had made one of their own and I can't remember what he used, but I know he did it for only the time to put it together and maybe something like $50 in parts. He loved how it worked and demonstrated it and it sure looked useful, but $400 is a lot of money!

Hhhmmmm.. maybe Fred or Paul could make one? Put me at the top of the list guys!

David Marks showed one on his DIY show that was essentially the same thing made with plywood rings glued together to make the body then the rollerblade wheels were mounted to metal strips with a slot cut down the center for adjusting them in and out. The whole thing just bolted to the ways, like the banjo. here are some pictures of it:

I have one for my bigggggg lathe---I had it built by a machine shop and still spent about 1/2. I will get you a pic of it today. You will also see them made from wood but the bigger ones really need to be made from good heavy steel.

There are several sets of instructions for home made steady rests. some even look like they were professionally made. Do some searching and snooping...Russ has given you a start.

FYI.. I just picked up a set of rollerblades on e-bay for $2.00 ($12 s/h) and I plan to make one based on the one John just posted (top link) I really like the use of the t-track on the arms. I have plenty so....
 
Just came across one at Grizzly....not sure what size you might need, but I haven't seen one for sale any cheaper than this....would think the quality would be good considering the source...

Not much different form others. here it is. Oh I fliped the wheel to the outside so I got all the clearence now instead of stoping at the inner edge as the pic shows now.
Also sorry about the size of the pic. It is too late to resize now.

Thanks for all the info everyone! It certainly looks like one can be made for a lot cheaper than they're selling for at the one place (although the grizzly one is a good price, but I probably want bigger). So now it's off to see if I... er,... dad... can make one for me!

Hey there, I know this guy! Well a little anyway. I have been to his shop. A little wood and some roller blades from a thrift store will go a long way[:)]
