Anybody Built a V-Drum Sander?

I did and sold it because I upgraded to a drum sander but I would definitely do it again if the need arose. They are great for smoothing out a larger panel but you have to get it set right and it is not meant to maintain the same thickness as you would get from a planer or a drum sander. They have their place. What were you thinking of using it for? That might be the best way to determine if it is worth it.

I'm not going for precision thickness sanding. Mostly for things like cutting boards and tricky woods that laugh at my planer.

I've found plans to do one without that overpriced kit. I think I'll go that route first, and if I'm not happy I'll revisit the v-drum kit. I have a motor available, pulleys and pillow blocks are cheap. Perhaps somehow make it easy to swap drums so I can change grits quick and easy. I need to find my graph paper...

You can also buy velcro 4in wide on line to coat the drum if you want to go that route. Here are a couple of links.

I have a woodmaster drum sander. they do have the replacement hook and loop materials but they are not the least expensive.

Thanks, I plan to use velcro. Shoot, those guys have 6" too. Sweet.

when you wrap your drum, wrap the velcro in a spiral in one direction and the when you put on the sand paper spiral it in the opposite direction.
