I'm not going for precision thickness sanding. Mostly for things like cutting boards and tricky woods that laugh at my planer.
I've found plans to do one without that overpriced kit. I think I'll go that route first, and if I'm not happy I'll revisit the v-drum kit. I have a motor available, pulleys and pillow blocks are cheap. Perhaps somehow make it easy to swap drums so I can change grits quick and easy. I need to find my graph paper...
