I just installed a set of french doors. I am finishing the doors with satin polyurethane. I built my own threshold out of oak. Do I need to buy polyurethane designed for floors for the threshold? or can I use the same stuff I'm using on the doors?

You can use the same poly as the doors. It won't wear as well and will need redone occassionally, still you can save the expense.

there is no different polyurethane made for doors versus floors that I know of . so a +1 on using the same polyurethane. remember to shoot for a minimum of 3 coats. (and to answer your first question, yes I'm a polyurethane expert.

Hey...You can't go wrong with Helmsman Spar Varnish made by Minwax. We finished a massive beautiful imported (and very expensive wood door) with Helpmsman Spar Varnish and couldn't have been more pleased! It has survived beautiful in the warm, dry weather in central California even with the fog, dry heat, etc. and still looks as beautiful as the day we finished it! Couldn't be more pleased and highly recommend this finish with all weather elements. We will use it again on our current front door when it needs a new finish!

After reading the last post I may have missed something very important. Polyurethane is too hard for exterior use the are very likely to crack if you have large temperature changes. I had it in my head that they were interior Doors. Go for the spar varnish if it's exterior. It is a little softer and will withstand the expansion and contraction of the wood.
