This is my second PSI Anvil pen, in brass this time. The blank is called Earth. I purchased both from Exotic Blanks. One thing I noticed, is that the kit on PSI's website shows it with an aluminum clip, but this came with a brass clip. I didn't know if I'd like the brass kit with this blank, and I'm still not sure. But it is a good looking pen regardless.

I don't know what material this blank is, but it was more difficult to turn than a typical AA. It's definitely not brittle like a Rhino or inlace acrylester, but it seemed more dense, for lack of a better term. I ended up rotating my carbide cutter to a fresh edge, which helped. My spindle gouge wouldn't hardly cut it at all.

There is a lot going on with this kit. Like the first Anvil I made, I had to bend the clip to get it closer to the body. But being able to rotate the clip made it easy.

Rather than praise every pen you make, I am going in the other direction on this one .... šŸ˜€ .... LOL !

But don't get me wrong .... your workmanship is great !!!

It's just the bits and pieces that you chose to work with .... but I do agree that the brass clip is much better than aluminum would be .

Thing is .... I have never been enamored of the Anvil pen kit since I first saw it .... it just doesn't do anything for me. . Although I do like the incorporation of a Schmidt SKM-192 click mechanism together with a Parker refill and without a damned white plastic refill extension.
Those are the good parts !!!

I worry about the clip being held with only one screw .... is there not a tendency for it to twist to the side after assembly ?
Or do you really torque it up and hope that it won't do that ? . Or maybe you use some Loctite to hold the clip, or a bit of epoxy .... ??

And then the knurling and those tapered portions on the nib and finial .... that styling has become a hallmark of recent pen kit introductions by PSI, and it's getting a bit tiring, IMHO !!

But apart from that, it looks good .... oh .... but that blank would look better on an all-aluminum (or chrome, or black-ti )pen kit.
It's not so suitable on a brass pen ..... again, IMHO !!

( Can't wait to read your retorts, Jim .... my friend :) !! )

Well, since I'm not really happy with it anyway, you can't hurt my feelings. So ha!

This is only the second one I've made, and haven't carried either, so I don't know if the screw will come loose or not. If I ever find out it is an issue, I'll put blue Loctite on it. As for it twisting, there is a machined "groove", so that's not likely.

I happen to like the knurl accents, and I know others do too. And it's not just PSI. Woodturningz has their Capital Click, which is knurled. There is also the new Field Click Pen from Turners Warehouse, which has knurling on it. I haven't turned one yet, but have ordered some. And of course the PSI Knurl GT, which started it all.

I think you're just old and crotchety, Mal. Are the neighborhood kids afraid of you? You need to broaden your horizons, and not be so resistant to change. You're just a knurl hater! :p

OK, OK, already ! . I see the machined groove !!

The neighborhood kids love me ..... I give them pens .... and those workshop pencils with colored leads in them !!

It's my grandkids that are a concern ..... I am worried they will turn to an addiction like mine !
But they have already told me ... "No more pens!" ... so at least theirs won't be as bad as this one !

You know, my best friend Olga told me one time, "I have enough pens." So I quit making them for her. But I must have misunderstood (she is Russian with a bad accent, in my defense), she actually loves them. I recently found out she really likes wood pens, so I've made her three. Including a Clarion Demonstrator fountain pen. Russians like fountain pens. She also recently asked me for a couple of pens to give to her friends. I really like making people happy with my pens.

Even my son, who I was convinced was truly tired of my pens, mentioned that he liked one I had made. Said it reminded him of a Thin Blue Line pen (he's a corrections officer). So you just never know.

Hmmm, I like that black Capitol Click. Looks like enamel. Wonder what kind of click mechanism they have? They aren't touting anything special or heavy duty about it, so I'd guess the components are just the usual plastic stuff.

The click mechanism comes pre-assembled, and doesn't come apart. But the plunger is plastic. And it makes the old fashioned click sound.

Thanks, Jim! The metal Schmidt mechanisms have become quite popular, so it's good to see them included in a lot of kits now. At least this is not one of those that you have to keep track of the pieces when you refill it. I use a Compson all the time and the clicker hasn't given me a hard time.

I've made several Compsons. I like the shape. Haven't had any problems either.

Nice! That first one looks like palm. Funny, I have a black palm one in the gold that I use frequently. This is my go to for writing around the house. The thing that bugs me about them is that the black finish on the plunger gets scratched up so easily.
