Windows 7/8 users.....What anti-virus and anti-malware are you using. My new computer came with just Windows Defender - I don't know how good it is on anti-virus but it seems useless on anti malware....

I recommend Malwarebytes Anti Malware. It's been rated as one of the best for many years now. The Premium version, which does real-time monitoring costs $25 a year. This should be run in addition to the built-in protection that comes with Windows.

i just got my new computer that widows 8 on it and my computer tech told me to use antispyware and malwarebytes with the virus protection that is on the pc i have used the free versions before and they diid very well so i will do that this weekend when i set the new system up on sat
I do have the free version of malwarebytes on my machine and did use that on my Vista machine.

+1 for Avast...it is the AV of choice for us techies these days. The free version does what you need but you can upgrade to the full version if you want to.

If you use the Avast Premium version, I just got a total refund from them because they kept acting like clowns. Middle European clowns that seemed more like used car salespeople. I going back to AVG or some other brand.
Does it run along with Windows Defender? Or, do you have to pick one or the other?

If there are kids in the household that use the computer, or older users who are not very computer literate, I recommend going with the malwarebytes premium for $25.

Best Anti virus and malware protection
I have found Windows Defender along with MalwareBytes to work very well. Both are "free".
With both of these programs active and up-to-date you will need nothing more to provide protection.

I use Avast and Malwarebytes. I paid for both and got protection for 3 computers for the price. Put them on mine, my wifes and my moms.

I remove Windows Defender...
Everyone must remember, the single best Anti-Virus tool is the item in between the chair and the keyboard. If that part does not work, the best software in the world can't fully protect you.
I spend more time educating my clients than teaching them about the functionality of the AV software.

Windows Defender and Microsoft Essentials are a joke. What ever AV program you go with, ensure it has a heuristics scanning capability.

Agreed. MS stuff is there for a feel-good cheer, but MS's mission is not truly security from the standpoint you need it. Avast! is the way to go... you have to link the free version to an email account (I use a junk one), and you will get the occasional ad-like pop-up in the corner of the screen pushing their premium version every week or two, but it's a very minor annoyance that's easily killed with a click. You must re-register once a year. Once you tweak the settings to remove the bings/dings of something being detected (infected mail is a huge cause of warnings), it's pretty quiet and just runs in the background.
Another question - do you remove Windows Defender before or after you download Avast?
Also I expect to get the all inclusive version for three years because it includes a secure delete when I delete sensitive files -- does that feature work? If it does not, I'll get the free version.
