After seeing Frank's (Rifleman1776) thread about making a "Poor man's Skogger or C1a), I decided to give it a try. I found a ½" x 36" piece of cold rolled steel at Fastnal for $12.00, a ¾" brass coupler nut from Lowes, (I think it was a couple bucks). The cutter (about 5/8" square) and screw is made by Onsrud Tools. Onsrud Link
I got them from the place that sharpens my saw blades. I don't remember the cost, but they only come in a pack of 10. I cut the steel to 12 inches and buried 3 inches in the handle. Its a little long, but it should work great for hogging out bowls.
I used this on an acrylic blank and found that turning at about 2200 rpm and coming in from the end of the blank I was able to get it round in two or three passes. I was really amazed. Once it was round the acrylic came off in ribbons even though I was using the tool as a scraper with the handle pointed down slightly. I was able to start sanding at 400 with no chips or blow-outs. I'll never go back to a roughing gouge! Thanks Frank!
