Mike was talking about his new vise. I have been reviewing my blank vise and the drill press to do pen assembly. I started looking at the NEW rockler Pen/drilling jig. then the light bulb turn on.
Of using a 3/4" pipe clamp and placing a acrylic on the inside, to soften the surface. The clamp has a threaded mechanism to press the pen parts into the tubes. And several have a quick-release for adjustments in using different lengths of pens. AS I'm thinking about this I actually have a pipe clamp and never even thought about its use in the pen assembly.
What I like is the fact the 1.)press mechanism and the tail piece are parallel 2.) The press handle is threaded so you can control the amount of depth I have a heavy hand and adjusting 1/16" more just never did for me With the wheel type handle I never have to worry about over doing the pressing the twist mechanism too far. now!
It only took 2 years to come up with this idea. Plus I did not have to send any $
my wife will like that idea.
