I have the DD750. I do well sharpening smaller drills, but my 13.3mm drill is about to frustrate me. I cannot get it to sharpen. Is there some trick to sharpening larger drills? BTW, I am trying to sharpen it to 135 degrees.

TIA,

The big thing for the Drill Doctor is setting it up properly for the helix angle of the flutes. If the spiral is different than normal, (normally set for a jobber length drill) you'll have to adjust the lever on the side to compensate. I do some drills that have straight flutes. I have to adjust it a lot for those. Maybe your drill hs a faster spiral than normal. You can compare to a drill that you know sharpens well to see if the helix angle is different.

That could be it, Bruce. Thanks for the idea.

Frank, it seems the more I try to sharpen the 13.3mm drill, the cutting tip is too flat compared to properly sharpened drills.

Dear William,

The bit is too big. 13.3mm is over 0.5 inches which is the capacity of the Drill Doctor. I know because I have tried this and it just won't work. Sorry.

e have one at work, and I have never been a fan of it. This is one of the reasons. The larger bits just don't seem to set up right in the holder and I get a rounded over flute just a bit. I have a guy here that has played around with the thing and gets the smaller bits great, but he doesn't really rely on the 'alignment flaps'. He has put one in and then looked at the fingers on the collet to see about where they line up on the spiral of the flute and eyeballs them in, he gets it to work great. It still takes less time to do them by hand for me than to mess with it.
BTW, Bob, he has the 750 which goes up to 3/4" bits.

<b>I wrote this message right after WC posted; but apparently pushed the wrong button and it went off into lala land. So for what it is worth, here is again.</b>

I have never seen any information to suggest that the larger drill bits require special techniques; but you might run your problem past the DD techies and see what they have to say?

I, too, had a problem one time sharpening a bit; but it was a 1/4" bit. I tried to sharpen it several times and it never came out right. I don't know the proper terminology for the parts of a drill bit so I can't really describe the problem; but you could just look at the tip and see that it was a bunch different in shape from a normal bit. Anyway, I took a spare 1/4" bit I had laying around and tried to sharpen it and it came out just fine. Puzzled, I tried to sharpen the first bit again and still no luck. I tried changing the orientation of the bit in the chuck several different times and positions and ignoring the DD alignment procedure. That did give me different results; but none of them were satisfactory. I finally gave up and trashed that particular bit. Just wasn't worth the time to fool with it.

That was many sharpenings ago and the problem has never recurred. I want to chalk it up to a "funny" bit; but really don't know??

Like Bruce said, the spiral of the flutes will make a difference. It will align the flutes up slightly different if the spiral is more 'spirally' (can I say that here!) or less.

My mistake. I did not think it went past .5??

Bob, most of the other models only go to 0.5. So, if you decide to get a DD, go for the 750 model. BTW, we forgive you for your mistake. [;)][:D][;)]

But to repeat a piece of info that some may have missed. You can buy the 3/4" chuck individually and use it in your 500 models and it will function perfectly. This is not just some jack-leg experimental idea. DD actually advertises this alternative for their 500 models.

FWIW,
Thanks to you folks and the information about the DD I went to my local Sears and they have it on sale for $139.99 and DD has a 15% mail in rebate coupon on their website for us to print out. So mine came to $118.99 for the 750X(?) I am sure it was the the 750 at least. I hope that his helps anyone on the brink of deciding to purchase or not. A $40 savings is not too bad. Thanks to you all for the great support and information.

Mike, if your best friend reads this, she will wonder why the extra money wouldn't have gone to something nice for her! [;)]

Mike: FYI, there are three DD300s on eBay right now. A lightly used one at $20, a new one at $10 and another new one at $105(which I think must be a mistake) It's been a while since I saw a final price on a 300 but I think they usually go for $30 -$40. I'll keep an eye on these and see how they end up. both are scheduled to end in a day or two..

Thanks Randy. I was thinking about $30-35 woulb be fine for me. I could also try to trade it for something I guess. My wife is not that impressed with my wood stuff unti my MOP Wall Street II that I just finished. That got her attention.

The first auction has closed. High bid was $28; but did not meet the reserve. Seller mentioned that this DD had sold on a previous auction for $42; but the winner never paid.

The next unit in line is a new DD and is currently at $31.

Thanks Randy. I am going to put mine up for sale on the internet classifieds of our local newspaper-it is FREE so I cannot beat that.
