Years ago I got the bright idea of turning a bowling ball into a vessel, mounted it between centers and began turning. In less than five minutes I had shavings all over the lathe, lights, ceiling, and any where else they could go (all over me). Stopped turning and began cleaning, last time I turned a bowling ball. Yours looks good, great use of a large ball.

How thick is the outer layer of the ball?

Most are only about 1/2 inch. Some (few) are thicker. I have a couple over an inch, but those seem to be rare.

Looks good! Almost a shame the swirls aren't more obvious in the finished turning, but that's to be expected when the swirls are meant for the bowling ball's size.
