I noticed that PSI is offering bottle stopper chucks when you order the bottle stopper bundle. They mention two different types of chucks. One is PK-BS1-MR (3/4"x 16 tpi) and PK-BS1-MJR (1" x 8 tpi). My question is: How do I know which will fit or does it matter? One of the bottle stoppers also looks like the adjustable kind. I understand the "tpi" is threads per inch. If I have a 3/4 x 16tpi chuck, I cannt use a 1 x 8tpi bottle stopper?

You need to pick the one that fits the spindle on your headstock. (3/4"x 16 tpi) and (1" x 8 tpi) refers to the size and threads per inch of your headstock spindle. I believe the threads size for the bottle stoppers is usually 3/8" x 16 tpi.

Have you looked at Ruth Niles bottle stoppers & mandrels? Her mandrel is a MT2. This way you don't thread it onto your headstock. Her mandrel also acts as a tap (so 1 less thing to buy & keep track of). She has a deal for the mandrel, drill bit, and 10 bottle stoppers.

Here's her site. http://www.torne-lignum.com/stoppers.html#$80.00

That is what I use and feel they are the best. I've tried others. But I'm thinking a 3/4" spindle wouldn't take a MT2. If it does, than I would recommend what you say.

Obviously, the underlying principle here is that the mandrel must match the spindle on your lathe. You can choose either a threaded mandrel (3/4"x16tpi or 1" x 8tpi are the most common choices), or you can choose a morse taper mandrel (MT1 or MT2).

But a potential concern is that for some new turners, the specifications of the lathe are unknown. Now, that might surprise a few folks, but I know that the specification for my lathe that appears in both the retailers advertisements and the instruction book that came with the lathe, is wrong. I ordered a threaded stopper mandrel from PSI based on the specification. But when I went down to the shop a few hours later and looked at the lathe, I recognized that the specification was wrong. Fortunately, an e-mail to PSI customer service resolved the immediate problem. I later sent an e-mail to the lathe manufacturer who acknowledged the error, but a year later the same erroneous specification appears in web advertisements for the lathe and also in the version of the instruction book that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site.

So the old 'measure twice' rule applies here - before ordering the mandrel, take a good look at the lathe and measure the spindle dimensions to make sure that you are ordering the right tool.

You MUST get the correct one for your spindle size. If you have the 3/4x16 spindle, you CANNOT use the 1x8 bottle stopper mandrel.

The threaded post that sticks out from the bottle stopper mandrel is 3/8 x 16. That is the standard for bottle stopper threads and bottle stopper mandrels.

Thanks. I was thinking the 3/4" or 1" was the top diameter of the chrome bottle stopper and the 16tpi or 8tpi was were it screwed onto the blank. I didn't want to get a 8tpi chuck and buy a 16tpi stopper. Does that sound right? I have a shopsmith and not a jet so my headstock is different then yours.I need one that mounts to spindal (just like my PSI mandrel does). I can also use one for a jacobs chuck.
