An Unlikely Zen

Somebody brought me a peice of wood from a family hunting cabin property.

Plainest piece of wood imaginable. Real worthless wood. Cut as a biscuit. But very dry and some soft spots.

The first one I made was nice except for blank cracks that only showed up when the pen was turned down. Bummer.

Second one came out nice and the customer is quite pleased.

Probably the most basic zen ever, but a meaningful gift for its recipient.

Nice job on the Zen Dan.
You took an odd piece and made it work.
The orientation of the grain sort of goes against the straight lines of the Zen making it appear shorter than it actually is. If they had enough for a diagonal blank, it would look much different.

It is kind of fun though because the rings wrap around the barrel.

I also think it's pretty cool and well made too. Even with that nice glossy finish, there's no mistaking that it really is wood. I often think that high figured woods like HRB etc are often wasted on many folks, cos they always ask the same question....'Is that real wood?'

Dan, if the client is happy, then you did your job well. I think the pen is pretty nice.
I have done a few from 100 year old pine that look similar to that one.

I love simple pens like this one. Not sure if it goes well with the Zen kit, but I definitely like the wood. Your craftsmanship is first rate!

Thank you. The recipient chose the zen style. It was not my pick.

The customer is always right (as long as they're paying full price and not complaining.)
