I had to give this a try, no issues until I caught a piece of aluminum as I was trying to hollow out the inside.
This was the first time I had used aluminum so wasn't intending to make an ornament, just wanted to see what issues I had gluing / turning. Even with a jig, tough to keep everything in line while gluing up the blank.
The ball is chechem wood, a couple of scraps I thought were light color between the aluminum, but definitely need something like maple to stand out a little more.
The ball is 1.5 inches in diam.
Still practicing my poor photo skills. The pics below are with a digital cam, a opaque storage bin and a couple of lights.
