I made a similar pen about 10 years ago. I haven't been doing any segmentation for a long time, so I thought I'd see if I still 'got it'.
The verdict: not quite. While this is not bad, it is not a precise as I wanted. Keeping the segments flat and square through the various gluing and drillings for the circle was a bit of a challenge. Precise drilling and turning perfectly round pegs was also not as good as I wanted. The lower blank was supposed to have the amboyna stripe, but there was a bit of spontaneous, high energy disassembly. Having said all that, it's still a good looking pen, just don't look too close.
Emperor kit, Ironwood, Amboyna burl with pine veneer, the circle is maple burl with holly.
