WOW! What a great site and article. If only the dorks that sit in Congress could have the same attitude as Mike Rowe, this country would be a better place. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for sharing. I think Mr. Rowe is right on! My grandfather was the same way, he could fix anything, mostly because if he wanted or needed something he did not have the option of "just buy a new one"; he had to fix an old one, or MAKE a new one. IMO, we need to (in some ways) return to a mindset of fix our own stuff rather than disposing and buying new. Just my humble opinion of self reliance, repair vs replace, and create your own vs buying someone else's.......

Last thought, kids need to know it's OK to work with your hands and be a craftsman, there is much satisfaction in making something..... even pens!

At a local craft fair there is a person making old fashioned corn brooms. I was more interested in the cast iron machine that held the broom, flattened out the bristles, and held them for stitching and trimming. Embedded on the cast iron side are the words, "Pat. Pending 1899". He told me if it ever breaks he doesn't know where he will get another.

On a separate note, I had a Shopsmith made in 1967. I needed a switch for it and called Shopsmith. The response? "Certainly sir, we can ship that to you".

WORK?? what's that says the Congressman, Oh yes he remembers that's what I have aids for, to do the menial tasks, you know, the stuff that would make me perspire and or soil my hands or clothes. Thank heavens for undocumented aliens, if it werent for them I'd have to mow my own lawn !!

When it come to work, I suffer from a vision problem. Can't see myself doing it. Just kidding worked had for 40 years before retireing. Raised my two boys the same way. To many of the younger generation expect to be given everything without putting in the time or effort.
