Ok so we won't get my wifes opinion on cause we already know what she will say  Any how we go to hunting island state park in sc every thanksgiving and go camping for the week. Well I am wanting to take my lathe with me. She gave me that look. I figured that I can pre cut and drill and even glue up the blanks and limit the snout of supplies needed. So am I crazy for wanting to take it. Let me know what you think.

It might just be me but "camping" = no electricity. We used to camp often and it was always to get away from all the everyday stuff. Yep, even used tents and made a fire for everyone to sit around at night and talk, laugh and just enjoy each other and relax. Now when I see people go "camping", they pack up the 5th wheel and bring their home to the site.

Well my wife wont go if she can't have running water and power. I would be fine without it but since they have power I figured why not. I have at least got her to let us use a tent.

I grew up camping before there were "camping grounds", now known as motels/hotels, and it was considered to be a "family fun" event. No offense, but it seems a little greedy to want to take a lathe if it is something everyone doesn't approve of.

Tell the wife you need to take the lathe so you can turn the wood you find to see if it's nice enough to make her a new pen. That way you and she can see if what you find while in the woods is good enough quality to even bother bringing home. Also, if you get a deer you can turn the antler while camping rather than bringing it home to stink up her house when you cut and turn. You gotta make this into a win/win for HER!

Leave it at home. Go and have fun and enjoy the moments. We used to take 20-30 young boys camping all the time, and we only had tents and sleeping bags. We even cooked over the fire. Tell the misses that the creek is her source for running water, LOL.

Does that mean I have to go shopping with her. She plans on shopping a couple of them days and I rather not.

Depends, do you have kids? can you do hiking/canoe/bug-hunt or such with them while she shops? If your only choices are going shopping or sitting around twiddling your thumbs, you might be able to get away with turning when she's off site. It should still be a last option after anything you can do on-site with a family member.

It sounds a little selfish to me. Why can't he take the lathe after all it's his vacation too. What I would suggest is turn the tables, just tell her that your willing to leave the lathe at home because you wan't to spend all your time with her and you don't want her to go shopping, I'll bet she'll tell you to bring the lathe. Make sure your wearing a helmet when you sleep and maybe a cup! But don't listen to me I'm always in trouble...LOL

Your poor wife!

"One question....is the tent big enough for a couch? Me thinks if you take your lathe you'll need one."

"I say leave the lathe, spend the time with your family."

"I'd leave the lathe, honestly. Seems like a fun idea until you try it."

Add to that burn out factor, I dont care how much you love anything if you do it too much you will eventually brun out on it. Ask any outdoors guide! The one exception is SPECIAL:wink: wife and husband time, your about to eliminate that! Believe me when you get back and have time to turn you will enjoy it more and tunring on the go is a giant pain in the butt!

On a more personal note.......what the hell is a campground?

Gather a few dried cabbage palm frond stems, you can turn that when you get home. And if you don't want to go shopping they have crab pots for you to catch a few for supper and the fishing seems pretty good. Do climb the lighthouse. Costs a few bucks but the view is worth it. Bring a mountain bike, theres trails you can do. Visit the driftwood beach thats between the camp and lighthouse and bring your camera. Drive out to the Old Sheldon Church ruins for a visit. Go down the road a bit from the campground for the shrimp burger.
See? You're going to be too busy for the lathe.

Usually we get there on wed and leave on sun. This year we are getting there on mon and leaving on sun. It is gonna be alot more down time this year. I just thought it would help me get the pens done for our church Christmas dinner around the fifteenth of dec. We wanted to give pens to all of the ladies and men of the church around fifteenthe or so. With the way my schedule is I will be lucky to be able to do one night much less two. So I just thought that since my wife will be shopping that I could turn a few pens while she was gone. Trust me I wasn't planning on my whole camping trip being a turning fest just a way of killing time while she an d our little girl was away.

I took my wife and our little girl to edisto so they could go crabbing for the first time. Caught some three dozen crabs in about an hour. Can't wait till spring to go again

Exactly why men and women should take separate vacations......take the lathe..............just in case the fish aren't biteing.
