I wonder if a tool could be made with a round or square cutter that is offset to the side of the tool so the cutting action would still be inline with the handle and hence no tendency to twist in the hand.

Also could you make the tool with a twist in the shaft??

Of Course -- with the trade offs of clearance (I am assuming you are considering a side cutting tool). The moment force will be decreased, but it will not go away and it all deals with the geometry from the tool rest and the force of contact.

You can put a twist in the shaft (offset) and Mike Hunter is doing that with his cup cutter for hollow form tools.

The "Eliminator" uses milled flats on a round shank to do that -- as well as a tapered shank to better dampen vibration.

Randy,
Look at some of the online vendors, CSUSA, Packard, etc.

There are MANY different tools out there that are just what you are asking about.

Ken, typically these have ALOT more clearance than the items you see listed in this forum.

You have not seen a rear catch until you run out of clearance on the back side and the rotation flips the tool and shoots the cutting edge deep into the side of what you are cutting.

Not that I will admit having done that.........

There are some pretty smart and well experienced tool people out there putting together some well thought and well engineered gear --

Here is one -- look under woodworking tools
