I am Steve Guzy, and happy to join this group. I am a career selfemployed woodworker. Due to significant back pain which is very limiting, I have transitioned in recent years from custom furniture work to only making small but high end "gift" type items which I sell directly to the public, and also wholesale to some stores here in the islands. About 18 months ago I started turning pens and this has REALLY got into my blood! My lathe is configured so I can have the relief of sitting down while working. I sell the pens along with the other wood items two days a week at a resort. As the quality of my work has improved I have built up to selling about 20 pens a month in the range of $135 to $275 with the top one sold for $435 (RH/Gold FP Lotus in Imperial Jade). I am looking to expand onto the internet this year. Learning from the members at this site has been of great value, and I know there is much more to learn! Glad to be here and thanks to everybody. Steve

Welcome to the IAP Steve, sorry to hear of the back pain you suffer, I broke my back in an accident at work in 2001 and suffer constant lower back pain and have limited mobility and movement.

Welcome from Michigan with a current spring like temp. of -1 degrees f. Sure wish I was there to see your work in person.

Welcome Steve! Glad to have you here. Your expertise in selling in a high end tourist market will be welcome here too. Some people might want to move there! I am sure you get to sell to some Japanese tourist there and they go for the high end pens for sure (usually).

I know that you know much of the information that I am including below but if there is anything there helpful to you, then it is worth the post. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome from Texas from someone who would love to be on Kauai right now. I'm glad you've found a compatible trade and are in such a lovely place to sell your art.
