Myself being messing with pens for a few months now would highly suggest someone new to this venture, spend a little shop time with someone that has been turning for awhile. I did that yesterday after our IAP Ga meeting, and it was enlightening.
Just picking up little simple tricks was worth the time ... like using the tube insert tool to hold the tube while gluing, using a sanding disk to square blanks, seeing a celtic knot procedure, shop towels for CA .... a little here and there will make my time in the shop better!
So ... find someone, bring a few blanks and hang out for a bit!
(thanks Gary and Allan!)
