...my first hybrid blank. I've turned wood and acrylic but haven't turned a hybrid before. Any tricks or things I should be aware of?

Thanks,

Ray

In general, epoxy does better. But there are plenty that use CA. Use medium or thick if you use CA. Make sure the wood is not an oily wood, of if it is, wipe it with acetone before gluing.

1. Several ways to do it too. drill out the wood; drill out the acrylic and join them on the tube with epoxy.
2. glue them together and then drill out as one blank.
3. If a cast acrylic onto wood, do your cast, let it cure well then drill.
4. Complex segments will probably need some form of holding it together while drilling.

Keep all drilling slow and cool. Take little bites and let it cool off. Heat will loose glue's grips.

I would add not to be too aggressive with your turning tool(s). Depending on the type of wood cast in the hybrid blank it can be harder or softer than the resin, making it easy to gouge the softer material as you pass along the blank. Maybe gouge isn't the right word, but it can cause an uneven turn. Just make light passes and take your time.

I recently turned three Hybridz blanks from Rockler. No problems. I used a carbide chisel held at an angle to get a "shearing" cut. To finish, I dry sanded to 600, used all 9 grades of Micro Mesh dry, then used Pens Plus. I understand most here would apply a CA finish, but I have yet to master it. Pens Plus works fine for me.
