I just returned tonight from St. Paul this evening.

Symposium was great as always. If anyone has the chance to attend any year i highly recommend it. This was my second consecutive and i hope to attend every year.

Seemed to be a much bigger crowd this year...makes sense being the 25th.

Took in 11 classes and a couple panel discussions. For all the books and DVD's one can buy there is no substitute for hanging out with both masters of their craft and folks that love to turn. Lots of fun to have a beer ( or two) with some of the big names who are so willing to share tips, knowledge and stories

Finally got to meet the PR Princess and Ed ( I think Jerry is still turning pens in their booth!) and a few others from IAP...always fun to put a face with a name.

Saw a couple pens here and there but recall many more in the Instant Gallery last year. A collaboration between Kurt Hertzog and Ken Nelson fetched about $450 in Saturday night's auction.

Stuck my head inside the Principly Pens meeting on Friday night but I think that group could use an injection of help from IAP...probably get in trouble for saying that but it's true..

Already booked my hotel for next year in San Jose...cannot wait.

We had a great time!!!...Lol bit nerve wracking at first, but I can not say enough good things about the show. My only regret is that we did not have the time to see the demos or classes. It was great to put faces to the voices, meet old freinds and make many, many new ones.

And a very special thank you goes out to Jerry Sambrook, without whom this would not have been nearly the successful weekend it was, and certainly no where near as much fun!!!:biggrin::tongue:

For those who are interested, Jeff Schnell put up a great youtube of the instant gallery -

The best that I could manage was a few quick snaps!

So what did you think of Virgil Leih work? He is the guy that turns tree trunks (the items in the 4th picture)
As he is a local turner and I work at a Woodcraft store we got to know him, it took us a few months to ask him about what he was doing with all the sandpaper he was buying from us he would and still dose, buy us out of sandpaper from time to time. When we found out what he did we could not believe it. We had do a talk at the store once. It was rather funny to watch the turners when he dropped off the items for his talk. They all looked for the glue joint in the turnings. The event was nice I stopped by on Sunday just to see what was their ended up buying 3 of the scotch vats blanks, now just to find the right pens for them.

I had an opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with him at the show. I was amazed at how large of a microwave he was able to buIld to dry his blanks( funny calling tree trunks blanks)

I did not go to any of the demonstrations as Ed and Dawn (especially Dawn) are real taskmasters!!!:rolleyes:
Truthfully, it was great to meet them and a few others who did introduce themselves. It was also geat to make re-acquaintances with people I have met with over the few years, and to have some interesting and very informative conversations with people such as Cindy Drozda, Tim Yoder, Joe Landon, Andy DiPietro, Dick Sing, and especially Bhin Pho. Cindy made some very informative and helpful tips on turning as we chatted about a few different things. She was excellent to talk with!!

Greg, since you are a member of the IAP, why did you not just come in and help make the meeting be more interesting for all of us though? I did cat-call at you through the door when your head poked in.

All set for next year already as well, IF Dawn and Ed let me back in the booth.
