I was turning this pen today, doing all the things you are supposed to do to prevent chip out and just at the end - bing. I was just about to toss it since the chip was a highly figured 1/4" triangular piece. Finding such a piece in my shop borders on insanity, but I gave it some time on my knees. I found it and carefully glued it back with thick CA. I then flooded the region with thin CA and sanded (head down) to the right size. It might be hard to see but it worked. I did not even try to hide it under the clip as the grain match took priority.
