Because I couldn't find the Deft spray in my area, I bought some Minwax Helmsman spar urethane spray finish to try on pens and duck calls. It is an indoor/outdoor finish resistant to wear and moisture. Sprays evenly and makes a fine clear, gloss finish with no further work necessary after proper sanding. Downside: takes forever to dry and cure. A duck call is still tacky after five days. To me, not acceptable. I don't reccomend.

Did you shake the can?

There is something wrong if it takes five days to dry. I've used the same stuff, but in a can and it's dry to the touch after five hours.

I use Min Wax spar urethane as a coating on fishing rods and it does take several days to fully cure, up to 7-10 days. It makes a beautiful, hard finish but you have to be patient while waiting for it to cure. I don't use it on pens for that very reason.
"No patience"

I've used Spar varnish in the past. Takes a long while to cure but once it does...you have a very nice finish...waterproof too!
