A herd of antler pens.

I made 11 antler pens for a friend of mine. These left quite a mess, white powder everywhere. I found that grinding off the first bit of antler works better that cutting it with the gouge. So the sanding powder got quite thick. After the first layer came off I finished with the skew. Some of these ended up in Japan.

That antler stinks too if you get it hot trimming the tubes. I found using my belt sander works excellent to even them up a bit before i turn. I love how antler looks. Did you stabalize them or just turn them raw?

I used very dry antlers. That way they are stable to use with the brass tubes. I did not use a respirator but I think I will next time.

Antler dust is very bad on the lungs - I've been told that antler dust hooks on and never gets out of your lungs - please wear a respirator!
I have never heard of stabilizing antler. Even it it is an old punky piece a little CA while turning goes a long way!

The pens look great, but that is quite a mess. No dust collection to the lathe? Any dust will do some damage to the lungs.
