I almost exclusively use my 1" spindle gouge that came with my lathe for turning. I recently bought a 3/8" carbide spindle gouge, but it's too small and pointy for the way I turn.

I've freehand sharpened my 1" a few times on an old bench grinder I have, but it was biting and grabbing today like nobody's business, and sharpening didn't seem to help...probably because I'm sure that I'm doing it wrong, especially freehanding it.

I'd kind of just like to buy a new gouge to take care of the orders I have at the moment.

Any thoughts on a specific brand/website? PSI has one, I know...

Or would I be better off switching to a Woodchuck?

If you r doing Pens.... I highly suggest the Woodchuck.

For pens I only use the woodchuck, even used it for my first bowl.

Why not see if there is another turner who lives near you that might help you sharpen your tools. It seems that there are a large number of turners in your state.
