I'm getting ready for my Farmer's Market art and craft show tomorrow... I'm running low on bottle stoppers, so I knocked out these few yesterday and an equal number today... then discovered I was out of the stoppers. A quick order from CSUSA and I'll have some more for next week... I'll just be short this week.

I've pretty much gone to the silicone inserts... the metal cones are a little more expensive and leads to having to charge more than my market will bear... I do the style shown, and another style called a hidden cork.

Awesome work! Maybe I missed it on CSUSA but is that where the yellow bottle stoppers came from? I would like to make some as gifts
 
Chuck you beat me to the punch posting your bottle stoppers. You have some great looking ones but I particularly like the "hidden" stopper versions. Hope you don't mind if I mimic them for some of mine.

BTW can you give us some details on the wood species and finish?

Be my guest and mimic away... I got the idea from another turner several years ago.

In the first set of pictures, the first 6 are all walnut. The next two are spalted Magnolia and the last is spalted maple. They're finished with 3 coats each of HUT wax.

In the second set - the hidden cork - the first and 4th are cedar, 2nd and 3rd are persimmon and the last is osage orange. These are all finished with a wipe on poly...about 5 or 6 coats each.

I'm just getting started in doing bottle stoppers, well...one to be exact lol, for one of my cousins who is getting married next weekend, so I don't think I'll try he hidden one just yet. If it works out I may end up making more.

Picked up an olivewood blank (coated in wax) from woodcraft that was in a pile near checkout. It should look pretty nice, fingers crossed.

I MIGHT actually be able to get 2 blanks out of it, I was turning an OLD piece of cedar I'm going to use for practice and it just happened to be about 1/4 longer than the olivewood blank, which if I remember correctly is about 3 1/2" in length, +/- 1/4" or so. I'll have to measure it again and make sure, but I may just go ahead and cut my test piece in half and see if I think I can make two out of it. :)

Sam,
The "hidden" corks are just as easy as the regular stoppers... I drill a 1 1/8 to 1 14 inch hole in the end of the blank, then a 3/8" hole for the dowel... I turn mine on a pin chuck now, but those shown above were turned on the PSI bottlestopper mandrel... the pin chuck lets me get closer at the bottom and a little more freedom in design... use a 3/8" steel rod, cut a flat on one side the thickness of a 8d finish nail, use the nail as a "pin" on the steel rod, give it a half turn to lock it and away you go... you will need a collet system to hold the 3/8" rod.

On the blank sizes, that's probably a personal preference... I usually start with a 2x2 x whatever is handy... usually about 2 1/2 long.
