A custom finial

Ok.. so its not a pen, yet

I have started turning a new metal pen which i will have finished by the end of the week.

I have just made my very first finial :biggrin: Many thanks to BigShed for the pointers on getting the original one out

Original gold finial which would seriously clash with the pen i am making

Newly turned aluminium replacement

nice snug fit!


The finial is not secured in the last photo. It will now be cleaned and anodised a colour to match the rest of the pen

NEAT! Does it have a radial pattern on it?

It does indeed. I am hoping the anodising dye will emphasise the markings a little more

Very nice Brad. Can you explain what the little tip at the bottom is for? Is it for holding in the anodising tank, then removing it after? It doesn't look necessary for the pen unless I'm missing something which is always possible.

Its caused when parting the piece off and would be removed before assembly. although using it for an anodising connection is a good idea, i didn't think of that

Nice, are those chatter marks, or were they intentionally put there?

A bit of both, they are chatter marks. but i offset the cutter below center to make it chatter like that to get the lines. So an intentional error

Original gold center band, next to the machined aluminium replacement

Loosely fitted together to check the dimensions. This part will be anodised to match the pen and the finial
