I have seen a couple things from Harbor Freight recently that I think are interesting:

1) A pen vise for the drill press: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=97838

2) A slow speed grinder (Tormek/Jet/Grizzly clone): http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=95236

This post is not a recommendation of these items, and I certainly have not made the investment in either nor do I intend to, however it is interesting that the folks at HF think that there is enough potential in both of these items to bring them in and list them for sale.

That is rather curious most especially the pen blank drilling vise. HF sells lots of machine tools, but us penturning folks are a fairly small nitch within the whole woodworking world.

The Jet/Tormak clone is interesting as well, but at least it has some broader appeal. I do notice that it is an 8" wheel instead of a 10" wheel. I wonder if it is using a standard 8"x1" grinding wheel.

I'm beginning to wonder just how small of a niche pen makers have. Seems like more and more companies are putting out stuff for pen making.

Tony,
If you plan on doing this for a long time then you really should invest in a PHD vise. The wait time from Paul can seem like forever but it is well worth the wait. If you plan on doing any segmenting then you are in for some frustration getting a straight and centered drill.

I've had a PHD Vice for well over a year.
