I had a few gift certificates from Lowes and needed to learn how to sharpen my chisels. Lowes had the Delta 8 inch grinder so I picked it up. Has anyone had any experience with this grinding system or one similar?

I've used the same grinder for several years now with no problems. It doesn't really do anything magical as a grinder, just a mid-range grinder, but it does that well. At the time I bought it (gift card from in-laws) it was the only 8" in the store, and that was important. Biggest performance boost was when I replaced the fine stone (wore quickly it seems to me) with a better one. The stone makes the grinder for the most part, the actual grinder is just a shafted motor really. I keep thinking I may buy either a Jet or Tormek wet grinder but so far the faithful Delta is doing all I need for my lathe. Wet grinder is something I want for my carving tools, knifes, and flatwork cheisels.

One odd thing the VS part does is it sounds like when I turn it on it goes to full 3450 speed and then slows down to the set speed. I have no real proof of that is what really happens, it just sounds like it starts much faster than it actually runs. If that is true I am sure glad my VS lathe doesn't do the same thing! [:0]

What stone did you replace it with?

Do you use a jig to sharpen or just set the table to the angle you need?

I found last night that I would get small ridges on the edge of my chisels after I sherpened them? What could that be a cause of? I now practice makes perfect but if I can get some answers to help things along that would be great.
