We have a cabinet electric smoker and I love it. They are a pain to clean but boy do they make life easy. I can smoke a shoulder or loin while I am gone for the day and never have to worry about it. $5 is a steal.
If you can find "LA's Totally Awesome" cleaner (in Dollar General and other cheapy stores), get a bottle. It's about $1.00 for a liter spray bottle (!) and works almost as well as brake cleaner on grease, without being so toxic. I know that, as a guy, I probably sound like I should be wearing a house dress with my hair tied up in a bun, but . . . the stuff is GREAT! My wife uses it to clean plastic surfaces in the kitchen, I've used it to clean grease off some old Snap-On tool boxes from the 1940's (DOES affect the paint, a bit, so you have to work fast and rinse it off, but Simple Green didn't lay a glove on the old grease) and does a WONDERFUL job of cleaning out my electric smoker after my son borrows it to smoke a pork butt for 12 hours. Well, I've used it for the same thing myself. Anyway, amazing stuff, and cheap. A 3 liter refill bottle is less than $3.00, as I recall. No, I don't work for the company or plan to show up at your house at dinner time to sell you that and facial creams and try to convince you to sell stuff too. Russ
Have your butcher slice some bottom round 1/4".
Buy some High Mountain jerkey seasoning. Follow instuction on package and make your own jerky.
If you really get into it, check out the book "Smoke and Spice" by the Jamisons. Highly regarded book pertaining to smoking foods and some other recipes.
I have a Bradley smoker. If you have any questions for me let me know. I have lots of tips. I ran a commercial smoker for over 7 years.
