Hi,

I have been looking for a pen blank with Dr. Who logo for a grandson and wonder if anyone has any experience with 3D printing a piece and then casting in into resin?

If Logos can do it, I wonder if this is a good enough excuse to attempt to convince my wife I need the printer?

:rolleyes: Sounds like a good enough reason to me !!! Only problem is you will be printing in a single color unless you intent on spending a ton of money . Jim S

Caution Huge Learning Curve Ahead. :smile:
 
For the sake of inexpensive expediency you should look into applying a decal. Lots on the site about the materials, printing, applying them and CA finishing. Or doing the same with a printed label, casting and turning it.

If one were to want to play with a 3D printer then skip the pen kits and turning in favour of printing the pen from start to finish. Trouble is that practicable and affordable printers are a ways off yet.
 
I have 2 - 3d printers and you would be better off using stickers. You could print the phone box in resin and paint it blue. A lot of the resing are paintable after curing.
The better desktop printers using Laser or DLps are around $3,000-$3500 for the printer and projector, I havent checked Form1's prices in awhile but they were in the $4k+. You will need 3d cad software that can export stls. Both of my printers B9 Creator and Solus came with their own software as part of the price.
The 3d printers that use pvc type line on a spool will not get small enough details and have fuzzy edges at each layer. The liquid resins that I use are $139.00 a Kilo +2.2 lbs (about a quart) to $190 a kilo depending on what I need to print and why.

IF you decide to do it its a blast. I can print details down to .3mm
You could probably go cnc to cut small pieces out of plastic resins like Alumilite and PR with a Taig desk top cnc mill and a 10degree tapered .1mm ball end mill .

I stumbled across this post while researching for a different project based on resin printing/pen blanks and I'm wondering what the outcome was ~6 years later?
