G'day!
Getting through some orders today. One of the diamondcast blanks blew apart when I slipped and jabbed the chisel in! Oh well, quick redesign and it was saved!
Last pic is very questionably questionable.

Love the pens, but that last picture made me laugh quite a bit.

That 3rd one looks amazing to me. I have always been a b side guy (going back a ways ways there) and find myself the same way with pens. The mistakes cause us to discover new tricks and techniques. Beautiful save, and I really like the celestial look of that blank!

Are you using a lubricant with the diamondcast? What diameter is the tenon prior to threading? Do you go back and forth with the die? I take a dental pick and clean out the shavings as I go. Continuously apply lubricant.

i undersize the tenon slightly - i made one awesome threadjob in ecto purple and thought OK, i'm gonna get a good redo on an orion blank that i have. NOPE. felt it grinding right as it started. I think i'm going to have to make extra-long tenons in DC from now on, just in case.

so yeah - 12.9mm for a 13mm tenon, i open up the die a bit and cut in stages, one full turn ahead, half a turn back... continuously lube it with 3-in-1. and the last one was one of the worst yet. i actually just ordered a niche toolworks sliding die holder - i've been using a cheap amazon one which works "fine" but i had to shim the crap out of it to get it cutting properly. so i needed to eliminate that as a variable - for my sanity if nothing else!
