I wanted to give an early heads up for the Youth Contests, giving everyone ample amount of time to identify a participant you are willing to chaperone for these contests. Between school time off and quality time during the Holidays, there might be opportunities to get creations ready ahead of the official submission period.
Following is a draft of the rules, please comment or suggest changes as you see fit. The rules will officially get posted in January, possibly with minor changes.

IAP 20th anniversary BASH Youth Pen Making Contests

The tradition for the IAP yearly BASH event is to host two contests by age category, a Youth under 13 and a Youth Over 13 and Under 17. Officially the BASH event will start February 1st, 2024 and entries will be accepted from that date until February 20th (date subject to change until the rules are officially posted).

For the creators to qualify for the Youth Contests, their age at the start of the BASH determines the contest they may enter. If their 13th birthday is February 1st, 2024 they qualify as under 13. If their 13th birthday is January 31st, 2024 they qualify as over 13. If their 17th birthday is February 1st, 2024 they qualify as under 17. If their 17th birthday is January 31st, 2024 they do not qualify for the Youth Contests.

These contests are to encourage our youngest members and turners to participate in these friendly penmaking competitions. All youths can enter, whether family (your child, grandchild, stepchild, cousin, grand cousin,…) or borrowed (neighbor's child, friend or acquaintance child,… In such cases, please ensure that you, the chaperone IAP member, obtain consent from their legal guardian for working under your guidance/supervision).

All entries must comply with the Universal Contest Rules.

Specific rules for the Youth Pen Making Contests:

1 - The object of each contest is to create a pen on the lathe using all the components of a commercially available pen kit. The origin of the blank is up to the creator and yourself, the chaperone IAP member (it is their creation, not yours!). Keep it safe!

2 - No modifications to the kit are allowed and all parts must be used. No laser or CNC work is allowed.

3 – You, the chaperone IAP member, may assist in any part of the creation but the creator must have significant "hands-on" time in the making of the pen. Similarly, the creator must have significant "hands-on" time in the making of the blank if y'all decides to go fancy (segmenting, casting,…). You are the best judge of the youth's abilities to use power tools. Keep it safe!

4 - Entry submissions, one per creator, will be accepted using a form that will be provided at a later date of this posting. Up to 3 photographs may be submitted. Pictures with an aspect ratio of 800 x 600 pixels are preferred but should not exceed 800 pixels for the longest side. The maximum file size is 256kb. I, the contest organizer, reserve the right to crop/modify the pictures before official posting if they do not comply with these rules. Pictures do not need to be taken by the pen creator.

5 - The submission must include a brief description of the materials, the process, and the chaperone's IAP member involvement in the creation process.

6 - Photographs should be on a plain background without props of any sort. A clear plastic pen stand is acceptable. Remember that you will be judged based on the photographs submitted.

At the end of the submission period, a poll will be created for IAP members to vote for their favorite entries. Voting will begin on February 22nd and continue until midnight February 26th. If necessary (over 13 entries per contest), a run-off poll will be conducted from February 26th through noon on February 29th. The winners will be revealed on February 29th, 2024. (Dates are subject to change until the rules are officially posted).
