I'm working on some pens tonight for the fall shows. I usually do this stuff in batches so tonight was glue night. Did I say it was HOT? Not hot or Hot but HOT? I don't know, I think today is the 27th or 28th day over 100. I airconditioned my garage this year, I bought a box fan. Anyway, back to the glue up.....nothing hard, just some tubes in some blanks. I use cold coke cans to mix the epoxy to try to increase the working time. No luck tonight, I got about 2 minutes of work time on 5 minute epoxy. You could see it gel when it dripped off the stick between the can and the tube. I use popsicle sticks to apply the glue, one is still stuck in the glue on the bottom of the can, one was leaning against it and now is stuck to it. Made me hurry but also made me laugh. Time for another type of cold one...

i just switched to 15 min epoxy because 5 min was driving me to drink as well. the 5 min only allowed me to glue up one or two blanks before having to mix more.
 
I switched to 60 minute epoxy for the same reasons. Even the 60 minute stuff only gives me 15-20 minutes at the very most. Once it starts to get thick, I don't trust it to spread around and give good coverage inside the tube so I still only mix it in batches that will glue up 3 or 4 blanks. The 60 minute set time doesn't bother me at all since I leave all my blanks to dry at least 24 hours before trimming and turning.

This does pertain to set time of epoxy but first I have heard of using epoxy for tubes. I have been using Ca and have had my "blow outs" on blanks for some time specially on cross cuts. Would epoxy help prevent this from happening?

i have switched to epoxy because it has a better bond 5 min will set up faster in warm weather, if your not using it right away use the over night cure it will give you a better bond the slower the cure the stronger the epoxy.

as for cross cut blanks i will pour thin ca glue in the blank let it soak in a cure to somewhat stabilize it. re-drill or use a file to make sure the tube fits, then use epoxy to glue in the tube.
 
I don't think frozen cookie sheets would last very long and I know I wouldn't last long if I "borrowed" the sheets.

I switched to epoxy a couple of years ago for the tubes for the longer open time. I usually mix enough to do 5 or 6 tubes....about 3-4 minutes in normal temperatures. I always lay everything out and stage the tubes w/ the blanks so all I have to do is apply the epoxy and put the tube in the blank. Next batch will be the 30 min kind. I never turn them the same day anyway.

Anyway...made me laugh....maybe you had to be there?
