Well, I went to kc for the new years weekend. All went pretty good. On my way home to Springfield tonight, I got about half way home and noticed this girl trying to flag someone down. So I stopped to see if I could help. Come to find out, she ran out of gas and all alone! Didn't know anyone to call so she started flagging people down for help!

It amazes me that she said she tried to flag down over 40 cars and no one would stop to help her!! This was on a 4 lane highway and in the middle of no where!!

So I took her to the closest gas station about 12 miles away to get some gas. I didn't have anything with me to put gas in so the station loaned us a gas can, I got her some gas and went back to her car to get her goin again... Put the gas in her car and she was good to go and was very greatful that I stopped to help.

Anyways, just wanted to share that with you all. It just amazes me no one stopped to help her....

I probably wouldn't have stopped. The way people act now, I'd worry about myself out on a 4 lane highway in the middle of nowhere rather than someone else.
 
I still stop to offer help. However, my 9 is lying very close at hand inside and in my pocket outside. I do not mind helping my fellow human, but I will not go down empty handed. You did good. Thank you.

Dave, VERY good for you.... REALLY bad for her. If she had a phone, but didn't have anyone to call, she should have called 911. Its a bad sign that no-one stopped, but if it was my daughter she would have been trained to call and ask for someone safe to call.

Now, I'm afraid she will get to the gas station and say I made sexual advances, I'll be arrested and she can then drive off, with my car.

Yes, things ARE different than they were 30 years ago.
 
Good you stopped but like several others I probably would not have. Several years ago while driving to work around 6 AM on a fairly cold morning I passed a lady who was walking down the dark country road in a light jacket and thought... that poor lady, I'll at least give her a ride to the gas station/Waffle House which was about five miles down the road.

When she hopped in it took about a minute to realize she didn't have car trouble, wasn't late for work, she smelled like a brewery and asked if I would take her to her car which was parked at a night club probably 20 miles away! I hope she enjoyed a waffle because that's where I left her.

Besides that incident, watching too many CSI episodes has taught me that there are all sorts of unsavory people out there and it's ALWAYS the innocent people who die or get hurt.
 
Both I and the girl I stopped to help change a tire were chewed out by a state police officer. He chewed her out for getting out of the car to talk to me, and to let a stranger get that close to her, and chewed me out for working too close to traffic. Really made me think, but I would do it again.

Ed, that thought DID cross my mind that she might do that... I was hesitant in taking her but took her anyways... Didn't want her left there all alone tho... As an ex firefighter, I was taught to help whomever needs it no matter what.
 
I belong to that wonderful group called Senior Citizens. Amazing how the world has changed over the last 40 years. In times past we would not even considered leaving someone on the side of the road. Now I am like most others who replied and have a hard time stopping but do on occasion.

In Texas if you call 911 they will dispatch someone to bring you gas.

I don't believe she had a cell, that was another reason for the flag down.

I'm glad I stopped instead of some psycho... Never know, if I woulda passed her by, the next guy could have been a psycho and she woulda been on the news tomorrow... So, I'm glad I stopped. And so was she.
 
I was driving my jeep a number of years ago on the way to my hunting lease. It was a nice day and I had the top off. I came across a guy with a backpack, hitching so I decided to stop and give him a ride. Before he got in, I took out my 9mm and laid it in my lap. When he got in, I told him that I was cool and if he was cool, everything would stay cool and the gun was there for my protection in case he was a weirdo. If he wanted a ride, that was my terms. He hopped in and we had a great conversation for nearly an hour!

And it is an excellent thing that you stopped! I'm not sure why the world is the way it is (are we just more aware of the psychos - or are there more of them).... but I'm glad for the people who are the good guys and help even if there is a risk in doing so. Keep up the good work!

Yep, thats the way to handle it if need be...:wink:

I could tell she as scared and worried when I stopped... she was fairly young, looked about 23... she said she never had to do this before. But once I introduced myself and started a conversation about our weekends in KC (she was visiting her grandparents there) she got more comfortable. Talked about everyting from the new years weekend to storm chasing! LOL

Yea, I totally agree about the way this area is getting... too much crap goin on in the news these days. She actually lives in humansville but had just moved there and didnt have any family or friends to call... so I was glad to help her out.

We have been traumatized since 9/11 and thrown into such a defensive mode tht many of us no longer have the self reliance and can do attitude this country has been known for so long. I, for one, and I know there are many others, simply refuse to be goaded into tucking my scrawny tail between my legs and running into a hole to hide. I spent some years as a volunteer firefighter for one reason and I'll be darned if I allow some political nut change my way of living. I'd rather be shot dead helping someone in need than safe at home in my recliner watching the big screen knowing another person is hurting because I was skeered! No, I am not no hero. Those are the ones wearing our uniforms protecting us from the real bad guys and I thank God every day for them. Dave, ye done good! OK, enough for my rant. As always YMMV

Thanks for helping her out. I have a two daughters and would like to think that if in trouble someone would help them. I still stop and help people in need. I was an auto mechanic and still stop and help stranded people. In my life I have found that most people are good and I will continue to believe it. I agree with ctubbs and refuse to let the media and fear direct my life.
 
Doesn't happen often....

I'm on the road so little that it's been a long time since I've see anyone stranded.

I do remember though, when normal people - especially service men used to hitch hike all over the place. I hitched from Newport RI to the Poconos in PA several times while in the Navy. As a teenager I hitched to/from basketball games, movies, amusement parks, and such on a pretty regular basis - we didn't have a car and I didn't have a license to drive if we'd had one so it was walk or hitch - usually it would wind up a combination of both. I lived 5 miles from the high school and rode the bus to school but dances, basketball games and other events we were on our own to get there and to get home afterward.
