Hi- my name is Cody Winters from Steamboat Springs, CO. I am brand new to pen turning. My dad has a lathe and he lets me turn on it but it's so tall I have to stand on a stool! So I was wondering if anyone out there would be able to help out with a good price on a mini lathe. I also need any and all other pen turning tools and blanks to get me started, as money is very tight.
I'll return the favor by giving you one of the first pens I make...and some other surprise as well. How about free snowboard lessons??
And good karma for life!!!!:yin-yang:

Thanks!
Cody

Hi Cody welcome to the forums, you might want to check Craigslist for stuff like this I've got good deals in the past.

In my opinion, since your dad already has a lathe and funds are tight, you shouldn't worry about trying to find another lathe. Build a simple, sturdy platform to stand on at the lathe.

Figure out how you're going to drill - lathe drill press etc.

Then all you really need is a drill bit, bushings, mandrel and some kits. Slim lines are around $2 each.

I'd guess your dad already has turning tools and probably sandpaper.

Cody, I don't have much in the way of wood blanks and I cast my own acrylics. It's a good jester, but you might want to keep your first couple pens. Then you can look back like we did (or still do) and compare the procress you are making.. Welcome to the IAP.

Welcome Cody, I will also say that you should keep your first 6 pens to look back on in the future. Among others......these will be some of your most 'special' pens.
Take a look at Harbor Freight......They have a mini lathe that costs under $100.00 when it is on sale. That is a great piece to start with. There is also a list of things that beginners should have to start. Do a search here and find that. You might be surprised just how much your Dad aready has.
Enjoy the hobby.....keep it fun.....it will last a lifetime.

Hi Cody,
PM me with your address and I'll send you some nice Texas pen blanks. No need to send a pen - just post a photo of some of your first pens.
