Last Wednedsay afternoon I had the pleasure of helping a young lad, the son of my wife's boss turn his first pen. I went and picked him up and we headed to the shop. He picked out a wall street kit and an Osage Orange blank. So we began the process and I let him get the feel of the tool cutting the wood. He was on cloud nine, and when he got it round, he asked me to finish it up. After I finished turning it, I let him sand it down and then I began the process of putting on the BLO/CA finish. He could not believe how easy it was to put the finish on it. Then I put it together for him and he was so pleased. His mom told my wife that he is hooked now. I wish I had carried my camera with me. He carries it everywhere he goes. Now his friends want to make them one. May have created a monster here. I was pleased to have the opportunity to spend the time to show someone how to make something they will cherish for a long time.

That's awesome. Maybe you should start doing some "classes" for kids. My Mom used to teach piano, and she always did it for free. Just her way of giving...

Great job spreading our hobby to another generation. I think woodworking is a great way to build self esteem in kids. He will probably need pictures to prove that he made it.
