Huon Pine Burl from Tasmania in the South of Australia and separated from the mainland. It is extremely slow growing in fact the slowest growing longest lived plant in the world,it can grow to 3000 yrs,one stand of trees 10000 yrs old,no one tree but the stand genetically identical.
Burl from Huon is not common some timber harvested over a hundred years ago floated and sunk is being recovered.Being a national treasure it is protected and sold under careful supervision,a dam was built in the past and quantities harvested, mostly gone now. This pen timber although aged at 1000 yrs from the tree is not unique but precious. It has a distinctive smell, sweet and pervasive with a lot together almost overpowering,I have seen planks 20 feet long 6 inches
thick by 5 feet wide, very rare.It was extensively used for boats, furniture going back to convict times, the climate is wet and not very accessible. Peter
