Just outside of town are bountiful fields of Sunflowers. I love the vibrant greens, yellows and oranges all within this one blank. If you could see it in the sun there is lots of depth, shimmer and chatoyancy. It's really beautiful.

I've made a few changes to my process since going to triple start threads from single start, like now my pen closes with 1.75 turns, and a couple internal changes, it kind of throws you off when your just getting the hang of one process to switch things up, but I'm sure I'll be back in the flow of things after a few more pens.

Very cool. Did you pour the Sunflower blank? Dave
Sadly, I did not, I purchased it.

I do want to cast my own blanks eventually, in the end it makes sense financially, but for now I'm delighting in the beautiful blanks of others.

How long of a blank do you need for making kit-less pens? I have some gorgeous blanks that I got from Turnt Pen Company. The blanks are made by Tim Crowe in Hornell, NY. He is a High School English teacher by day. His blanks are 8-1/2 inches.

I'm curious though if you really need 8-1/2 inches or would 8-inches do? or 7-1/2? - I'm asking so that I can make a new set of molds for kit-less pens and I want to make sure they are long enough but not so long that I am wasting resin.

Regards,
Dave

You really need every bit of the almost 8.5" some of it at the pour end is unusable and has to be squared off. The cap, body and section all get squared off and then you need to allow extra for the dimple the 60 degree makes (that should be parted off if possible.)

This blank is one of his blanks and in person it is magical.

Great information - Thanks. It sounds like I should maybe shoot for at least 8.75. - Dave
PS I have quite a collection of his blanks, but I've only used one so far - I can get a regular pen and one "Sierra" style from a single blank. I have always wanted to get some of the Primary Manipulation #1 blanks from Johnathon Brooks from Carolina Pen Company, but his eStore always shows out of stock. I've been told that the best way to contact him is through his Instagram or Facebook, but this forum is about the only brush with social media that I have. Turnt comes in a close second to Johnathon's blanks. Here are some of the one's that I've gushed over and would love to get.
