I've been on a Spalting kick for a couple weeks now. This Olympian is made with a Spalted Bigleaf Maple blank I picked up from rockyb. (Actually, I picked up 5, but this is the first one I have converted into a pen). Pic of the blanks is included below. I have never seen the variety of colors along with spalting in a maple blank before.

That is some priced lumber. Makes for a great pen blank. Job well done on the pen. That would have done real well in the Pretty Wood contest in the Bash.

Just had another look. Man Mother Nature sure does make some nice blanks for us.

I agree John! This is likely the original "hybrid" blank. :)
I couldn't agree more with both of you. All we do is bring the existing beauty out. You have done that very well here! I do like the spalted woods with darker hardware, too.

I've got some pretty big pieces of spalted maple from a neighbor's tree that was taken down a year and a half or so ago. Hoping to get at it with the chainsaw soon to cut it into manageable size pieces and hope to make a bowl for her out of it.
