I would say other things about it but this is a family site, I fried my Processor, the cooling fan started squealing and before I could shut down everything went dark, now I have to get a new processor and fan, I looked at the cooler and it was choked with dust bunnies and saw dust, of course it could have been the fault of the Dumb Stupid Ignorant owner for not bothering to blow it out, I haven't been in the box for two or three years. DUH

VERY SMART owner. Now you can get the newest, bestest processor for half the cost you paid for the one you fried.


OR, you can add 1's and 0's manually and try to get the same results.

You could replace the processor and fan ... but then what do you have .... A three year old (or older) computer.
If you try to upgrade the processor chances are you will need a new motherboard as well, and then the power supply won't be enough.:frown:

It's really difficult sometimes to know when to "fix" and when to cut your losses and buy new.
If you decide to fix ... check out newegg.com ... they have some good buys and are very good to deal with. Good luck!
 
Problem is, I have EIDE Drives and that computer is also the control for my CNC mill, I have a couple of slower processors, I have one AMD that I can over clock, it's a 1.2 GIG and I can clock it to 1.6 to 1.8 which is what I had, A power supply isn't a problem the fried one has a 450 watt PS. I need a new system any way, the fried one was 5 years old and was pretty hot for it's day. the problem is every thing now is SATA interface except optical drives, this is my daughters old system and SLOOOOOWWWW.

So are you saying you would need to copy your old drives contents to the newer SATA drive if you upgraded to a new system ? That seems doable.

That looks like the way to go, I got my old 1.2 AMD in and it's running OK but this system isn't going to last a lot longer, I haven't tried it on my Mill yet and that's the crucial part, but my control only requires 1 gig. so I have a little overhead.
Just won't be able to time split as well.
I just looked on Tiger Direct and they have some bare bones systems that look decent and a good price. I just hope this puppy holds out for about three weeks. I haven't built any thing since I did my daughter's new system and that was about 3 years ago, why can't computers be like old VW's

Chris that sound like my computer actually my 70 doesn't even have the heat exchangers, any more,:eek: but there are no holes in the exhaust. at least I can still get parts for it. and there weren't a lot of changes through the years. A computer is out dated with in six months or less. I used to be into faster and bigger and high performance computers, but now I devote that to lathes and my trusty VW. There are times when I envy the Luddites and the Amish.
 
Do like I did and install water blocks on all the "thigs that get hot" and fill the system with 11 gallons of windshield cleaner. Been running at or near a few degrees above ambient temperature all year long. No problems with heat whatsoever. I do a lot of graphics work and that creates a bunck of CPU usage and normally a bunch of heat as well.

Dust is definitely a killer of PC's. Keep'em off the floor for sure. A good blow out ever so often is also a good idea.
